The first Test match of the series between South Africa and Bangladesh was played on October 21, 2024; South Africa emerged as a battering winner by an innings and 273 runs. South Africa concluded the four-nation modern T/20 cup championship, having outplayed Bangladesh at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong in all departments of the game. Batting first after South Africa won the toss, the team amassed a decent first innings score in which three players, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs & Wiaan Mulder, all registered their first hundred in a Test innings. This landmark was achieved only twice earlier, when three players scored their maiden Test hundreds in an innings.
In reply, Bangladesh failed to come good, with the core of their batting destroyed by the South African’s potent bowling, and could not stage a comeback. This match helped South Africa gain 12 more points in the World Test Championship, and Bangladesh could not get any points this time. Player of the Match was awarded to Tony de Zorzi for his excellent performance.
It strongly suggests that the Test format is where South Africa is strongest, indeed when they’re playing in Bangladesh, while it also points to specific weaknesses in the Bangladeshi side.

Match Highlights
South Africa’s Batting Dominance
Chasing the target after South Africa won the toss and chose to bat, an outstanding innings was scored by Tony de Zorzi, followed by Tristan Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder. Tillakaratne, Kasturi, and Neeshan, all three Test centurions, were scoring their first Test hundreds, and this feat was achieved only the second time three players made their first hundred in the same Test inning. This great batting show put South Africa severely on top early in the match.
Bangladesh’s Batting Collapse
In reaction to the high score by the South African team, the Bangladesh batters suffered. They came under tremendous pressure from the South African bowlers and never really got into a position where they could build a significant partnership. The Proteas bowlers were always in charge, putting pressure on the Bangladeshi batters and thus leading a very fast follow-on.
South Africa’s Bowling Strength
South Africa’s bowlers took advantage of the favorable conditions by setting tight lines and releasing pressure when they posted a disciplined line throughout the match to restrict Bangladesh’s scoring. They went in very well and in perfect combination, and they wholly demolished the Bangladeshi batting to get a victory by an innings and 273 runs.
Player of the Match
Tony de Zorzi was once again given Player of the Match, going for his all-around performance but especially for the big-hitting he did, which saw an extensive score set that was enough for the team to set for victory from the onset.
Impact on World Test Championship: This win meant South Africa gained 12 points towards their ICC World Test Championship, with an excellent start to the series noted. On the other hand, Bangladesh could not find the right tempo and remained out of the scoreboards in this match.
